Sergio Mendes was born in Brazil in 1941. As a child, Sergio studied classical piano, with intentions to become a professional musician, but by the time he’d reached his teens, his appreciation for bossa nova had grown, and he switched from a focus on the classical genre to bossa nova. By the early 1960’s, while still a young man, Mendes was touring the world, performing with the likes of Herbie Mann and Cannonball Adderley.

In 1964, Sergio Mendes released his first two albums with his band, Brasil ’66. The album Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 rose to platinum status in the mid 1960’s, bringing Sergio Mendes to worldwide recognition and acclaim. However it was his performance at the Academy Awards in 1968, singing “The Look of Love,” which truly brought his talents to the forefront of mainstream music. Immediately following his performance, Sergio Mendes found himself with a number of top ten hits, becoming the biggest Brazilian star of his time.

In the 1970’s, Sergio Mendes continued to perform worldwide and record, but his career suffered a slight decline. Mendes experienced a revival in popularity in 1983 with the release of his album, Sergio Mendes, followed by the release of the albums Confetti (1984), Brasil ’86 (1986), Arara (1989), and Brasileiro (1992), which earned him a Grammy Award. After a nearly decade-long hiatus, Mendes returned with the album Timeless (2006), which features collaborations with such notable artists as Erykah Badu, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, and Jill Scott. Timeless was followed by the releases of Encanto in 2008 and Bom Tempo in 2010.

Most recently, Sergio Mendes received an Academy Award nomination for “Real in Rio,” featured in the film Rio (2012.) Mendes continues to write, perform, and record.
