Benjamin Géza "Ben" Affleck-Boldt, commonly known as Ben Affleck, was born on August 15, 1972, in Berkeley, California. He was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by his parents Chris Anne (Boldt), a school teacher, and Timothy Byers "Tim" Affleck, a social worker. The Affleck household also included Ben's younger brother, Casey Affleck, who would also become an accomplished actor. Ben's ancestry is primarily English, Irish, German, and Scottish, with his middle name, Géza, being given in honor of a Hungarian family friend who survived the Holocaust.
Affleck harbored a passion for acting from a young age. He got his first acting gig in a Burger King commercial and appeared in the PBS mini-series, The Voyage of the Mimi (1984). It was around this time that Ben met his lifelong friend and fellow actor, Matt Damon. The pair played little league baseball together and attended drama classes. Throughout his teens, Affleck appeared in TV movies and minor television roles, with his feature film debut coming in 1993 with Dazed and Confused. He then gravitated towards independent films such as Kevin Smith's Mallrats (1995) and Chasing Amy (1997), gaining critical acclaim and making a name for himself at the Sundance Film Festival.
However, the success in independent films began to wane, and Affleck found himself frustrated with minor roles. This led to a turning point in his career. He and Damon, who was facing similar challenges, decided to take control and wrote their own script. The result was Good Will Hunting (1997), which was picked up by Miramax, giving Ben and Matt the creative control they desired. The film was a massive success, earning them both fame and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Affleck's career ascended, and he was finally able to select roles rather than constantly audition for them.
Affleck seized this opportunity and chose to star in blockbusters such as Armageddon (1998), Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Pearl Harbor (2001). Despite some missteps with comedies like Gigli (2003) and Surviving Christmas (2004), he found success in the early 2000s with hits like Changing Lanes (2002), The Sum of All Fears (2002), and Daredevil (2003). His performance in Hollywoodland (2006) marked a positive turn, earning him a Golden Globe nomination.
In the late 2000s, Affleck began to diversify his career, turning his hand to directing with the critically acclaimed thriller Gone Baby Gone (2007). His directorial success continued with The Town (2010) and the political thriller Argo (2012), which won him a Golden Globe, a BAFTA for Best Director, and the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Affleck's acting career continued to thrive as he headlined the thriller Gone Girl (2014) and donned the cape as Batman in several DC superhero films. His recent performances in The Way Back (2020) and The Last Duel (2021), as well as his Golden Globe-nominated role in The Tender Bar (2021), highlight his enduring talent and versatility as an actor.
