Michael Crawford was born in 1942 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and spent his formative years in a traditional Roman Catholic family. Raised primarily by his mother in Wiltshire and later in Kent with his grandparents, Crawford faced adversity at a young age when his mother passed away at just forty-four. In this challenging period, he found support from the Kendalls, a caring family who fostered his talent and passion for performance, particularly through the influence of performer Marie Kendall.

Crawford made his stage debut in London during the early 1960s, where he started to gain recognition through various television series and films. His career took a significant turn when he moved to New York in 1967, landing a role in the film adaptation of "Hello Dolly!" starring Barbara Streisand. However, after returning to England, it was his lead role in the musical "Barnum" in the early 1980s that became his breakout success, capturing the attention of famed composer Andrew Lloyd Booking Agent & Management" href="https://stage.onlinetalent.com/artist/r_b/ Lloyd.php"> Lloyd Webber. Webber subsequently cast Crawford in the titular role of "The Phantom of the Opera," which premiered in 1986 and defined Crawford's career.

That same year, Crawford received a Tony Award for his powerful performance, particularly noted for the popular song “The Music of the Night.” Following this success, he secured a record deal with Atlantic, releasing multiple albums, including "Songs from the Stage & Screen" and "With Love." His ambition and artistry culminated in "A Touch of Music in the Night" (1993) and "On Eagle’s Wings" (1998), showcasing his versatility beyond the stage.

In 2002, Crawford returned to Broadway to take on the role of Count von Krolock in "Dance of the Vampires," followed by the role of Count Fosco in "The Woman in White," which opened in London in 2004. However, health issues stemming from dehydration caused by a cumbersome fat suit forced Crawford to leave the latter production after three months. The situation was exacerbated by a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), a debilitating condition that hindered his career for several years as he underwent treatment and recovery.

Crawford later moved to New Zealand to be closer to his daughter’s family and to recuperate. He celebrated milestones in his career, including attending the 10,000th performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" in London in 2010, where he reflected on his own experiences during the show's early performances.

In 2011, he originated the role of the Wizard in a new adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz" produced by Andrew Lloyd Booking Agent & Management" href="https://stage.onlinetalent.com/artist/r_b/ Lloyd.php"> Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. He made special appearances during significant anniversaries of "The Phantom of the Opera" and reprised his role in a one-off special of "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em" for charity in 2016. Crawford’s latest venture was starring in the West End musical "The Go-Between," which premiered in May 2016.

Beyond his extensive career on stage, Crawford is recognized for his support of numerous children’s charities, including the Sick Children’s Trust and the Lighthouse Foundation.
