A Great Big World BIO

A Great Big World is an American musical duo hailing from New York, composed of songwriters Ian Axel and Chad King. The two artists first connected while studying at New York University's Steinhardt Music Program, where they collaborated on songwriting. Following their meeting, they formalized their partnership a few years later and began performing together.

The duo made a significant impact on the music scene in 2013 with their breakout single "Say Something," a poignant ballad exploring the complexities of troubled relationships. Before that, A Great Big World gained initial recognition with the track "This Is the New Year," which was released prior to their signing with Epic Records. The song garnered further attention when it was performed by the cast of Glee in an episode, and it also featured in other popular shows such as One Tree Hill and The Amazing Race. This exposure helped propel them into the mainstream.

In 2012, A Great Big World successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their six-song EP, which included "This Is the New Year." After catching the attention of Epic Records, they secured a record deal that would include a simultaneous tour and the release of their second EP.

In the fall of 2013, the duo released "Say Something," which was initially featured on the television show So You Think You Can Dance and later re-recorded as a duet with Christina Aguilera. Their performance of the song on The Voice, alongside Aguilera, significantly boosted its popularity, leading it to peak at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and reach the number one spot on iTunes charts.

Following the success of "Say Something," A Great Big World released their debut album, Is There Anybody Out There?, in the winter of 2014. The album also features the singles “I Really Want It” and “Rockstar,” both of which contributed to the duo's rising prominence in the music industry.
