As one of the professional dancers on the hit ABC reality competition Dancing with the Stars, Karina Smirnoff is today among the most recognized dancers of the era. But long before she rose to prominence on the show, Smirnoff was born in 1978 in Kharkiv, in the Ukrainian SSR. After moving to the United States with her family, Karen began dancing as a young child, and by the time she was a teenager she was already competing professionally as a ballroom dancer.

Smirnoff’s career before Dancing with the Stars boasts five-time U.S. National Championships, in addition to multiple championships at the US Open, Asia Open, and Dutch Open. Her foray into entertainment actually began with the 2004 film Shall We Dance, in which Karina appeared as a dance instructor to actor Stanley Tucci. But in 2006, Smirnoff joined the professional dance team on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars for the show’s second season. The appearance would become her big breakthrough and spark a turning point for her career.
