Actress Amy Sedaris was born in 1961 in Endicott, New York. Long before she rose to fame for her role as Jerri Blank in the series Strangers with Candy, Amy grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina along with her siblings Gretchen, Lisa, and David, who himself went on to become one of America’s most celebrated authors. Amy’s earliest gigs were with a number of theater comedy troupes, until in 1995 she made her television debut on the Comedy Central show Exit 57.
But Sedaris’s biggest breakthrough came in 1999, when she was offered the role of Jerri Blank on Comedy Central’s Strangers with Candy. The show lasted for three successful seasons and spawned the film by the same name, which was also successful. Sedaris is also known for her collaborative work with Steven Colbert, both as a writer and a frequent guest on his award-winning show The Colbert Report. Amy Sedaris has also appeared on a number of other television shows, including: Raising Hope, The Middle, The Closer, Sex and the City, Monk, and Rescue Me. In film, Sedaris has also appeared in: The Best and the Brightest, Shrek the Third, Snow Angles, Bewitched, Maid in Manhattan, School of Rock, and Elf.
In addition to her acting talents, Amy Sedaris, like her brother David Sedaris, is also a gifted writer. Notable work from her includes: I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence (2006); Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People (2010); and Wigfield: The Can-Do Town That Just May Not (2004.) She also contributes a monthly advice column for The Believer. Amy has also co-written a number of plays with her brother, including: Incident at Cobblers Knob (1997), One Woman Shoe (1995), Stitches (1994), and Stump the Host (1993.)
