Carlos Mencia BIO

The comedian and actor Carlos Mencia was born in 1967 in Honduras. Carlos grew up in a large family, as one of eighteen children, but moved to Los Angeles to be raised by his aunt and uncle when he was a teenager. Mencia was an excellent student and after graduating high school he began studies at California State University, with plans to become an electrical engineer. A night performing improve at a local comedy club changed that for Carlos, however, and he decided instead to pursue a career as a stand up comedian.

 

Within a short amount of time, Carlos Mencia was performing at some of LA’s most notable comedy venues, including the L.A. Cabaret and the Comedy Store. Television appearances on late night talk shows followed, until Mencia was selected to host the comedy showcase Loco Slam for HBO in 1994. Throughout the 1990’s, Carlos continued to perform stand-up, appearing on HBO for two comedy specials and on Comedy Central Presents. Around the same time, Carlos began to branch out into film, and by the turn of the new millennium, he was appearing in such films as Outta Time (2002) and 29 Palms (2002.)

 

Since that time, Carlos has appeared in the films The Heartbreak Kid (2007) and Our Family Wedding (2010), and on television in his own half-hour comedy show, Mind of Mencia, which debuted in 2005. He also released three albums, Take a Joke America (2001), America Rules (2002), and Unmerciful (2003), and established the restaurant chain Maggie Rita’s, serving as co-owner.
